The right hand 'cup' and the left hand thumb position with a 'gap' is the only way to really have both wedges properly 'on' plane and still use BOTH wedges to fully support impact.

Anything else and you are giving up some power and/or alignments.

Moe's grip was far better than most will recognize in this regard.

Right hand only chip shots will also help show you that the grip is not so much 'in the fingers' as 'at the base' - indeed a stronger right hand (and probably weaker left hand) than most are used to.
