Zone #1 Drills

I'd like to hear some of your ideas for Pivot Drills. Tom Tomasello had his Stick Drill, but some think it may have promoted an off plane move of the right shoulder. I'm not sure about this, because when done dynamically, it may have produced a good result for some people. David Ledbetter has an arms crossed drill. You get the idea.

Anyway... what about some other drills for Zone #1?

For me, Ben Doyle's snapping a towel into an object drill was great for training the pivot (zone 1).

The drills in V.J. Trolio's "Missing Piece" may cause many to re-think how pivot drills are taught.

Yoda, what do you feel about the "level hip turn"? In the MacDonald drill the figures knees are very similar height ...no dipping of the left knee....left and right hips appear similar level....Sam Snead mentions level knee at the top of backswing in his book " How to Play Golf" ( 1946).... does "level knee action" lead to "level hip turn"???

Yes, the Hip Turn will be "level" when the Knee retains its Address degree of bend. Any straightening of the Knee (Right Knee on the Backstroke and Left Knee on the Downstroke) will tilt the Hip in the direction of the straightened Knee (7-16).

All of the Tomasello drills are excellent including the stick drill....and the extensor action...worth its weight in gold.

If the stick drill produced a good result for one, it should produce a good result for everyone.

BTW, I'm really glad I'm out of the Tomasello arguement loop. Tommy was the man...No one's better for applying TGM to the actual game of golf than Tom Tomasello. God rest his soul.

Oh, Alex Sloan called called Tommy the greatest golf instructor in the world.

What do people feel about the drill where you put the butt of the club in the navel and keep it there during takeaway...was popular with Faldo and David Leadbetter?

Is this a means of encouraging standard hip action and hip turn?

This drill precedes Leadbetter and Faldo by more than a half century. See the MacDonald Exercises (Golf, 1927) in golfbulldog's post #4 here:

http://www.lynnblakegolf.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=4435.

I highly recommend these Exercises (indeed, I recommend the entire series). Follow the written instructions exactly. Also, imitate precisely the illustrated Body and Arms alignments, especially the On Plane Right Forearm. Execute the Pivot as directed in Exercise #4 (Post #1).

Remember, everybody, thanks to golfbulldog's efforts in the MacDonald thread, you can 'click on' each of the images in the Series, and they enlarge big-time!

Tommy Tomasello's Brilliance

Tommy's brilliance was his simplicity....

Along with Ben D and Lynn no one has ever
explained the concepts better!

I only wish I had known about TGM 7 years ago...
would have saved a lot of frustration and money

Now I realize that when I was being taught it
was the blind leading the blind.....
instructors who just taught "swing" not the loading
and geometric angles
