Overrolling and above plane on the backswing, SOLUTION?
So far I have only been able to correct swinging under plane on the backswing by cocking my wrists straight up as I start my arms back, thus double-cocking. I don't consider this a valid option because I have a difficult time maintaining a FLW through impact with full swings. I am wondering what drills and especially mechanical changes anyone would suggest. Any and all advice is most appreciated, I know there are a lot of people with this problem. I want to kill this rattlesnake once and for all.
Since I have such a late wrist set with this overroll I was curious how one can develop an earlier set without double-cocking. Bend the right wrist back before the arms move all that much? Thanks in advance, Matt |

Do you mean an OVER-TURN(pronation of the left wrist) on the Backswing? |
Indeed, much like Ray Floyd.

To change this you probably should change the origin of your takeaway. It sounds like you are mostly taking it back with the LEFT ARM AND HAND. Work on learning the RIGHT FOREARM PICKUP TAKEAWAY. This will FEEL very different from the other. To keep the geometry of the takeaway... there has to be a certain amount of UP... YOU PROBABLY NEED MUCH MORE THAN YOU HAVE, AND LESS TURN(PRONATION) OF THE LEFT WRIST. |
In addition, pay close attention to not letting the hands move 'away' from you during your takeaway. The hands should move back, up, and in. The more 'up' the less 'in' you need. Monitor your hands ;)

You may want to take some practice swings with a head cover just above your right elbow (righty golfer)and pressing it against your side.
I say this because when you apply extensor action and fanning of the right forearm, it will SEEM that your moving the club outside. The head cover trick eliminates the illusion and makes sure your married to your chest. Once you get this feeling down,it takes practice and hours of frustration. But once you get it....AHHhhhhh. |
Another image that may be helpful to you - at the top of your backswing, get your hands as far away from your right shoulder as possible, directly in 'front' of your right shoulder - imagine that a line from your right shoulder to your hands at 'top' is parallel to the target line and level to the ground. It may be helpful to you to also feel that your right hip is moving back, as if you are 'sitting on your right cheek' a bit at the top. Also, watch Stuart Appleby's waggle and give it a try. It will help quite a bit in giving you the feel of things being 'out in front' of you.
