Basic Motion for a new guy
Hi all, you guys have a great community here on the website - certainly looks like a man might learn a thing or two by hanging around :-)
if i am using a 58deg for 2' back & through basic motion training with a no-roll face & i'm doing it well, how far might i expect the ball to travel ? I've been doing a few here in the back garden & getting around 20'. Not that i think distance is the issue just that it might be an indicator of how well or badly the stroke is being made ? Or maybe there is a better measure ? ps if i am on the right lines, i think i get the principle that one doesn't add anything to the stroke & i'm looking for the drag the mop feeling & for the ball to spring off the face with a crisp sound. pps i'm totally new to these concepts & feel a bit in the dark so my apologies if they are dumb-arsed questions :-) I'm going to go back through & see what else i can find on basic motion but post this anyway as a start off point. TIA fwiw i'm 48 yo, i've been playing for 7 years & currently play a 5.0 hcp that i would like to see a good bit lower. |
Tim, you are in the right place here at LBG. You have asked some really good questions that are quite relevant. I am 55 and have played lousy golf for 42 years and mediocre golf for the past 2. And that is why I am getting hands-on instruction from some TGM/AG disciples. If you haven't purchased The Golfing Machine book, I would advise you to do so. It helps to refer to the book as you read many of the posts. Enjoy your journey, Jeff P.

Hi Jeff, thanks, yes i will get the book in a bit, it is 50 gbp over here, so it will be the wife's xmas gift to me.
yes it was a lame question, 'quite relevant' was kindly put :-) i've been reading around the forum quite a bit & hit some balls today & i've no doubt the concepts are moving me forward. I found myself thinking, roll; no-roll; reverse-roll; feeling for loaded pressure points in the hands; getting the right forearm to point out in front of the ball towards impact & hit some nice shots. Hope we can help each other a bit all the best, Tim. |
With a 5 hcp you must already have skills that many of us only can dream about. But if TGM and this site can bring you up to the next level, you'll be a scratch player in the forseeable future I would think...

What does it take to reach any of the hcp goals we might set i wonder ? Not being content with where we are ? Stubborn belief that it is possible even though we can't see how at this point ? Playing with the best players you know is a good help for moving forward. I now play with a +1 hcp fairly regularly & his long game is completely different class to mine - so it teaches you something to play with better players, i'm on a search for striking it like he does. Though there are a few ways to skin the cat of course, a 3hcp long game & a super sharp short game might do the trick. What do you play off & where would you see yourself in the future ? My brother-in-law is Norweigian btw hails from Gjorvik (spelling ?) |

I'm not sure what city/town you are referring to. A place called Gjøvik is well known, but I am sure there are places named Jorvik etc as well.. |

Yes age is bound to be a factor, my +1 mate is 25, which helps & my 48yo has advantages over your 62 for sure. |
