The Plane Variation looks to me like a Reverse Loop 10-7-G.
His right elbow gets into nearly a Push position 10-3-C by Release position, but is probably technically a Punch.
He uses a Double Overlap Grip...little finger and ring finger overlapped.
He uses a Float Loading type of procedure... Downstroke cocking of the wrist.

He is one of the BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD. He came up with a way he could strike the ball well, and well under pressure, and stuck with it.

One probably would not teach his pattern, but if a teacher spots someone, especially a young player, with an unusual technique, that still strikes the ball well, he should observe the player closely for a while. If the player strikes the ball well, and especially if the player has pretty good IMPACT INTERVAL, and RELEASE positions, he should most likely be left alone to beat his opponents... just like Mr. Furyk.
