In terms of PR , marketing that is one heck of a gamble they are taking. Earls comments are clearly out of context and given that he was no saint himself it makes the creative seem very ..... constructed. I'm sure they've tested it to death with focus groups but it could back fire and badly if it is seen as being insincere. Which would be the last thing Tiger needs right now in a PR sense.
No middle ground on that one. Sincere apology or insult to our intelligence? Why the frontal attack? I wonder what the alt versions were? The spin doctor is the last physician we wanted to see, in my opinion.
I was watching the Golf Channel last night and stepped out of the room as they went to commercial----this commercial. As I walked back in John Hawkins was going nuts about the ad just shown. So I cranked back the DVR and watched it. Now I know why he was so shocked and angry. Never did like Nike and never buy their stuff anyway. This was over-the-top.
Tiger's neighbor's 21 year old daughter came out yesterday that they had done it right there in Eldrick's house while his old lady was still there . . . .
Wonder if her pops should come out with a spot . . .
Man hard to believe that Nike/Team Tiger would try to make money on this situation . . . these people know no shame.
I was dumbfounded with the stupidity of their approach!
I did some marketing for American Express at one time. If Tiger was my client, Nike would have opened "Battered and Abused Women and Children Shelters in 5 major cities," or sponsored college scholarships for low-income/middle income girls so they would have real career choices and not want to chase their dreams in bars and strip clubs.
25% of all Tiger's winings and 10% of all Nike sales would fund the projects. Nike's new slogan on all their apparel for one year would be 'Just do the right thing!" They could sell that all day!
