Pivot Components in Acquired Motion
I’m having a hard time understanding the role of the Pivot components in Acquired Motion.

The intoductory paragraph to 12-5-2 now says: „Zero to Minimal Pivot and add […] any needed Shoulder Turn“. In the 6th edition it even read: „Zero Pivot except Shoulder Turn“.

But the first item in the list is Weight Shift with reference to 10-14-A, the Standard Hip Turn (a free turning of the hips in both directions with a weight shift in both directions). How can you have a Zero (or even Minimal) Pivot with a Weight Shift and a free turning of the Hips?

Items #3 and #4 from the list refer to 10-16-C (Right Anchor Knee Action) and 10-17-C (Flat Left Foot Action). Wouldn’t Right Anchor Knee Action (with its straightening of the left leg) and Flat Left Foot Action (with its lifting of the right heel) together with Standard Hip Turn automatically result in a (more than minimal) Pivot??

I’ve been watching the Brian Gay Stroke Fundamentals video a lot, lately (awesome video BTW). And I really like Brian’s motion. He certainly turns the Hips quite a lot in Acquired Motion, no? Is that still Zero/Minimal Pivot?

Maybe my understanding of Zero Pivot is faulty. I have always assumed that Zero Pivot meant: no turning of the Hips at any time, no Weight Shift at all, no Hip Action, Flat Feet at all times (except for rolling), and no Knee Action.

And why does item #2 in the Acquired Motion list refer to 10-13-B (the Flat Shoulder Turn) instead of 10-13-A (Standard Shoulder Turn). Wouldn’t a Flat Downstroke Shoulder Turn automatically throw the clubshaft off plane, producing an over the top move??

I hope someone can shed some light.

Pivot Points
Thank you for your thoughtful post, Par71. I look forward to writing an equally thoughtful reply. Unfortunately, I have limited time at the moment to address the major concept involved and the related half dozen questions you asked. Give me a day or so, and I'll be back.

What a great question, Im really looking forward to Lynn's response.

I asked Lynn something sort of similar once to which he said "you dont have the 7th do you!" and he was right. I got up and imitated Brian's chipping stroke and he shook his head no .... We were just getting into it all when some distractions kept us from finishing the discussion. I was left hanging by the appearance of the lovely Mrs Yoda dressed for dinner, the play at the 150th Open as seen from our window in the Road Hole Bar and my brother eating all my cocktail nuts when I wasnt looking ......

This is going to be a "get ready to mark up your book" post , I think.

Yoda, please help!
I'm still desperately waiting for your reply on this one...

If you don't have the time for a detailed post at the moment, maybe you could at least give some cues?
