Holding Back, delaying the Shoulder Downstroke Turn is a common technique. The increasing Left Side Stretch caused by your Hips initiating the Downstroke, ensures that your Hips will pull/Push the Right Shoulder down a Path. The path would be Down Plane if the Downstroke Hip Slide/Turn is accommodating.

The increase feel of Clubhead inertia also helps you direct the Hip Motion more precisely.

But don't be fooled, the Right Shoulder is Still moving out, only now, with the delay and under the guidance of the Hips, it's also moving Down. Together, the forces create an On Plane Downstroke Shoulder Turn.

The instances where your Right Shoulder moves more out than down only indicates that the Right Shoulder by itself simply Opens and Closes. As the Last Component in the Pivot Train, it's direction is best controlled by the preceding components and your stretch allows this to happen.

When shorter Strokes are used, Extensor Action provides all of the Stretch needed. The Downstroke Shoulder Turn delay for these Strokes may be preceded by a pushing away (stretch) of the Arms.

However, Stretching the Arms and Shoulder to unify the Pivot Train is not Extensor Action. Stretching the Arms does not control the Path and Motion of the Right Elbow. As you become accustomed to the Delayed Shoulder Downstroke Turn and your game improves, you'll need Extensor Action to take it to the next level.
