I may be wrong on this but I'd say that club makers over the years have built in a prescribed amount of shaft lean into the shorter irons. This is what I take to be hooked face. A driver made to align at low point with an open face would would not have a hooked face by this logic ........ But I may be way off base here not sure.

I'm on the same page O.B. I don't know for certain, but I have come up with the same answer...
