The toe of the club "pointing" IMO means the leading edge of the club "points" in the direction of the toe.
very shortly after the clubshaft parallel to the ground position ,the leading edge could be on plane.ie pointing along the plane line.

Beat me to it Neil! Poorly worded in the book What a surprise! Yes, leading edge sounds much better.

If the “Toe” is measured from the leading edge to the top line, then as the club traces the Straight Plane Line with HH, then it does point to the Line and the score lines are pointing skyward. No?

To get everyone that wants to be on this page - on the same page- this discussion primarliy refers to the 2nd paragraph on page 28 of the Golfing Machine.
Mike, If I understand you properly- I'd say that the Toe as you correctly measured it- is not pointing at the line. That he is referring to the leading edge. Take the vertical hinging that he refers to in that paragraph where he says A) the "toe" (i.e. the leading edge) will be approximately 90 degrees across the plane line with the clubface looking squarely towards the sky. So squarely towards the sky comment just applies to the vertical hinge - not horizontal or angled.
Also, this area of the book is definitely an area where he's talking in a loose context for the golf course and not holding a degree of precision required for the scientific laboratory.
6-B-3-0 also shows a picture of horizontal hinging that might be helpful in this thread.
