Wide Elbows or Narrow?
The Right Forearm should be on Plane. This is one one the main concepts of TGM.

This topic concerns the positioning of the elbows. I know there is some teaching out there that advocates golfers to get the elbows close together, as in one of the pictures in Ben Hogan's book.

I believe there are some people that can TRY to do this and still be in a good position, because they are not flexible enough to over do this.
Some people, however can get the elbows very close together, and if they do so enough they are actually in a weak position, and the right arm in in a less than ideal position at Address, Top, and Impact.

In the pictures in Chapter 8 and 9, the elbows are not close together. In 9-2-5 there is considerable space. At the TOP in Chapter 10-6, the right elbow appears wide, and looks to be at about a 45 degree angle, like a "strut", or bridge support.

Now... in Chapter 10-3 dealing with Elbow Positions. With Punch, the elbow still looks wide, as at Address, and the Top.

With Pitch 10-3-B... do you think the width between the Elbows is still the same as at the TOP, and the elbow has just moved in front of the hip, or has the distance between the elbows become closer?

This is one thing that brian changed in my setup....point your elbows more DOWNWARD than OUTWARD.

This automatically puts the elbows closer and for me, makes it easier to make an on plane backswing.

What about the idea jim of the right forearm matching the spine angle at the top of the back swing?

Argh!... The picture you refer too according to my source say's go look at real in action pictures of Hogan. You won't see the same.

The spacing between elbows in theory should remain relatively the same. This is accomplished with the use of extensor action.

Pointing of the elbows down and elbow pockets up is not how you are going to be at normal impact. Pointing of the elbows to the sides is also not great.

When you arms hang normal and the relationship to the wrists hands is what seems to be ideal for the stroke.

As for the Forearm the spine relationship, I believe you will find that this is variable depending upon your setup for the plane steepness or flatness as well as if you are a swinger or hitter. Nicklaus was said to have a flying right elbow but it match his storke, where as Hogan's look very much different and match his stroke.

Isn't there a relationship between maintaining extensor action from address to both arms straight and the look of the elbows at the top of the swing.

"Width" and its concept is extensor action through and through. If a swinger comes to me with "slack" at the top of their swing I will introduce extensor action to them by way of a rope and also ask them to hit balls on the range with a ball between their arms.

So in a nutshell, wouldn't it be safe to say a swinger with extensor action from Section 2 through Section 9/10/11 will appear to have the arms close together at the top of the swing.

At the same time, i feel this concept of a hitter attempting to get the elbows closer together (right elbow pointing down) can be devastating to the hitter because of his right arm's role.

elbows
Hogan never looked like his book, as Martee said.

Yoda recently showed me the variations of elbow positions. I'm a hitter so I set up at Impact Address with the right forearm on plane. The elbow should not be pointed inward towards the body at impact address.

At the Top I try to ensure the right forearm is perpidicular to the plane by supporting the shaft at a 90 degree angle as much as possible. Physically, I don't quite get to 90 degrees. In any event, the elbow "is where it is" based on my attempt to obtain that position.

On the downstroke, my elbow returns to my body for the Punch-stroke (10-3-A). At some point I would like to work on the Pitch (10-3-B) and a snap release...but I'm not quite ready for it!
